so last night i was a busy girl. before our yummy dinner at sanafir, i had to be at home for a 5:30 appointment with a PADS representative. i had applied to become a puppy-sitter and i was having my home interview to ensure that the environment was puppy-friendly. i have a few things to pick up off the ground still, but other than that i was given four paws up!
unfortunately the next couple of weeks aren't exactly the best puppy-weekends, and i've told them of my next available weekend, so hopefully i'll be able to bring a puppy home sooner rather than later. they just received 2 puppies today and 3 more arrive tomorrow.
so what happens, you ask? well, during the week i'll receive a call to see if i can take a puppy over the weekend. if i can't, then obviously nothing happens. if i can, on fridays after work i'll take my car out to the PADS kennel, and pick up my puppy and all of his/her belongings. then we go home, get settled, and then it's up to our imagination at that point. the puppy will go everywhere with me. i'm not sure what kind of impact this will have on my social life yet :P so i won't be offended if i'm not invited out anywhere. however, it is imperative that these puppies get exposed to the great big world out there. hopefully i'll even be able to take him/her to a hockey game one day :-) so we'll be out in the lower mainland checking things out, and i'll be armed w/my 10-15 commands for him/her. once the weekend is over, then i return the puppy to the kennel on monday morning before i go to work.
now, this is all easy in theory, so we'll see what happens when i'm put to the test :-)
also, just to show ppl what a big commitment it is, i just came home from attending a puppy class. now, when you get any large group of animals together, you're just asking for trouble! but i'm sure when they're out by themselves getting 1:1 attention, then they're much better behaved. you're actually supposed to attend 2 puppy classes, but since i'm a superstar cuddler already, they've told me i only need one. but i'll still go again next week, and just brush up on the technique and commands.
and that's it! sounds easy, hunh? keep an eye on my blog in the next 3-4 weeks.....we'll see what happens :-)

that was the big question last night.
after a delish meal at sanafir (read sandra's blog), we headed back to sandra & mike's place for dessert. ryan and i were sitting on the couch when he saw the fish-pillow. then he started the debate on whether or not fish have teeth. mike and i were on the no side, and ryan and sandra said yes. then ryan and ang arrived, and we were deadlocked 3-3. unfortunately it remained deadlocked until chris arrived much later. he was for the no's! at least chris and i agreed.....the other couples didn't ;-) finally, i asked mike to google it because i just had to know whether we were right or wrong. sadly, the no's were wrong. most fish do have teeth......

i became a spa junkie
3 years ago, in my final year of managing the starbucks waverunners dragonboat team, i was given a farewell/thank you gift.....a gift card to beverly's spa on 4th. prior to receiving this i had never been to any type of spa before....not even for a manicure, and to be quite honest, i never really had any itching to go either. however, it soon became a bad addiction. but since i don't drink or smoke, then i figured why not?
also, as soon as i got engaged i decided that since i was flashing my left hand at everyone i needed to have a beautiful french manicure :-) my mission over the course of our 10 month engagement was to find the best spa for a french manicure, so i would have beautiful hands and feet on our wedding day.
beverly's spa on 4th - i jumped right in and requested La Cote D'Azur - 30 minute massage, 75 minute power facial, manicure & pedicure, discover your colours and a spa snack. this totaled 3.25 hours and cost me just a little bit (the dragonboat team was very generous!). this was heavenly....i felt totally pampered :-)
eccotique - i've visited the vancouver, richmond and burnaby locations. i haven't been there in the past year, and i've noticed the website menu has changed. the package i had was the bridal bliss (this appt. also coincided with our engagment photo pictures) - aveda custom facial, sea salt scrub, french manicure, eyebrow shaping, and a make-up touch-up. i've also had regular manicures and pedicures (with and without the paraffin dip). this was by far the best place i experienced for a french manicure, and why i picked this spa for me and girls the day before my wedding.
spa ethos - the only service i had here was the hot stone manicure. i wouldn't go back.....the treatment room made me feel like i was in a box. and the way the hot stone was described i expected a little something more than the marble pebble (i noticed they don't offer it anymore). however, a friend of mine had a pedicure there, and she loved it. the tranquility room was nice though - i'll give them props for that.
kingfisher resort and spa - this is where we had my stagette weekend. our weekend package was the 2 night summer spa escape - enjoy two nights accommodation, choice of one spa service, one three course gourmet dinner, two full breakfasts, and one hour in our Pacific Mist Hydropath. spa service is a choice of a refreshing facial, full body massage, or a thalassotherapy massage bath. rate includes unlimited use of the spa facilities including the West Coast Steam Cave, Sauna, Outdoor Hot Tub and Heated Pool, and Ocean side Fitness Room.
i upgraded my spa service to the balacing facial which included an application of self-heating marine mud to the spine - really nice!
le petit spa - this is one of the places where i only did a test of the french manicure.....it was ok. i also had my eyebrows threaded while i was there. ouch :-(
pink lime - a while ago, there was a 1/2 price coupon offer floating around e-mails everywhere. so i took advantage and booked myself a full facial. i think they forgot to mention that when you pay 1/2 price, you also get 1/2 service :P i could've sworn my facial lasted less than an hour, plus she didn't get very many blackheads out. then i went another time and had a french manicure.....first of all, the esthetician was running late due to the previous client. then, she had to leave me 1/2-way through to go help her previous client purchase some products. needless to say she did a haphazard job on the french manicure. whatever.
chatters at brava salon - this is where i went today for my french manicure.....i was looking for something close to home, and relatively cheap. renee googled this for me, and it was both decent priced and decent service. i don't know if i'd necessarily go there for full treatment services - i wasn't getting a great vibe.
in my quest, i also tried a "spa" on robson street.....the employees were all vietnamese, english was their second language, and their price boards didn't seem to match what they were telling us. we managed to bargain our way down to $15 for the american manicure, which was actually the french manicure :P i also went somewhere in yaletown for sunny's pre-wedding manis and pedis, but i can't remember the name of it.
and last but not least is SKOAH! i think i've already expressed my love for skoah by dedicating several posts, plus i'll have another update in 2 weeks after sunny and i experience our extreme facials :-)

finally tried a new restaurant
i hate to admit it, but it's been a very long time since i've tried a new restaurant. i tend to be a creature of habit, and given our neighbourhood, chris and i opt to stick close by. but last night, i was out w/the girls, and we ventured to the burnaby/coquitlam border.
the house of tofu soup......pris' co-worker had mentioned this korean restaurant so we googled it and read some ppl's reviews and then made a 7:30 p.m. reservation and headed east. at first we couldn't find the place, because it's tucked behind a plethora of korean mini-malls catering to every need.....travel, groceries, food, etc. when we eventually got there 10 minutes late, we were immediately seated and proceeded with trying to understand the menu (written in korean, english and chinese). the service wasn't exactly speedy, but since there were only 2 servers for a packed restaurant, and we weren't exactly in a hurry to go anywhere after, i wasn't too fussed. i ordered the soup (mild w/kimchi) & bulgoghi (pork).....the soup comes in varieties of spicyness.....white (clear soup), mild, regular, hot. or something like that.
our food started arriving within 10 minutes.....a series of appetizers to accompany our meal.....2 scoops of mashed potatoes, 2 pieces of daikon swimming in a cold type of sauce (we're not sure what it was), kimchi, spicy pickled onions and some type of root vegetable (i think), and a cold seaweed dish. it was a near disaster when i went to grab one of the eggs.....i was pretty smart and shook it first and that's when i discovered it was raw :P we also ordered a side dish of deep fried dumplings....really yummy! our meal was off to a good start. when our entree arrived, the soup dishes were boiling in the stone pots and this is where the raw egg makes an appearance :-) our server also dished out the rice which came in a stone pot. when the rice pot was empty, she poured cold tea into the pot to loosen the rice.....it's almost identifical to japanese okaisan (rice cooked w/genmaicha), or a distant relative of chinese congee.
for $13.99 for my 2-part meal, i was completely stuffed at the end. the pork was excellent.....mildly spicy on a bed of par-fried onions.....delish! we're definitely going to go back there again.....especially since we know how to find it now :P

ok, since sandra tagged me, and i've seen what sharon's done also, i figured i better post something, too :-)- creme brulee - i've had a few different varieties and i haven't met one i've disliked!
- earl's caesar salad - i actually have the recipe for their dressing (thanks, renee!)....very yummy and garlic-y!
- milestone's spinach & artichoke dip - others have copied it, but it's never as good as the original at milestone's :-) hmmmm, maybe i should go eat there tonight!
- pajo's fish & chips - one of the few places that still serves them in newspapers....a very popular place on a nice summer day!
- schnitzel semmel - when i was in austria w/sarah and tara way, way back in may 1998, i ate these sandwiches every day!

no more excitement.....it's all about stress
so all my excitement over the weekend for my big work announcement is gone. the news was sent via e-mail today, but i've barely had a chance to revel in the happiness. it's only 1:00, and i feel like i've been here for 12 hours already. all i can say is thank god i went to bed at 9 p.m. last night :P
so what's the big news? it's kind of complicated to explain, but here goes.......i have several leaders i "report" to......K is my direct manager (and coach) for my team, T manages the support staff, and N is a canadian leader i assist exclusively. N was just promoted to a new 18-24 month position within the company which will change her responsibilities completely. in her place C is going to take over, however, C works in calgary. as N's assistant, i am completely in-tune w/her current responsibilities and the ppl she manages/works with, so i was the natural choice to assist C with her new job as she familiarizes herself w/the work (also, our calgary office is in a bit of a shambles these days, so the support required isn't quite top-notch - this is something that T is still trying to fix). so that's my new job.....i'll be assisting the new canadian leader in the company, while still maintaining all my other responsbilities.
so now i'm trying to familiarize myself w/N's new ppl whom she'll be working with, get me and C all set-up so i can assist her efficiently from vancouver, and my team has been bombarding me w/"regular" work this week. my entire day tomorrow is shot because i'm going to be trouble-shooting for a client meeting that's somehow turned into 3 videoconferences w/europe :P it doesn't help either that N and C are travelling all over the place within the next week, and we need to sit down and get our calendars cleaned up.....i have no idea who's going where right now.
also in the next couple of weeks, i'm coordinating the kick-off for our united way campaign in the office. and then in october, the start of our new fiscal year, i'm throwing myself into our community relations team to get our office more involved in (wait for it......!).......community events! bet you didn't see that coming! hahahaha! and at the end of october the benefits industry is hosting the Benefits of Caring, a fundraising event for ovarian cancer canada. i'll be preparing for and attending this event, as N had asked me ages ago to be on the organizing committee with her. how could i say no?
i don't think there are enough hours in the day to get all my work done. my desk has never looked like such a disaster zone.......and my e-mails are just piling up, and my computer keeps beeping bloody reminders at me.

good-bye steve-o.....crocs rule!
for some strange reason, i awoke at 6 a.m. today. odd, because even on a work day, i don't get up until 6:30 a.m. perhaps it was a sense of impending doom that was waiting for me, perhaps because subconciously i wanted to watch justin timberlake on muchmusic spotlight, perhaps i just needed to have the news confirm to me that there was indeed no traffic on this last holiday of summer.
then, as i was flipping channels on my tv, i saw him. steve irwin, infamously known as the crocodile hunter, was doing an interview and i got excited, because i thought perhaps it was live and he was going to show us some animals. but then the clip ended 2 seconds later with the news anchor saying the animal world has suffered a great loss. panicked, i started flipping through the channels......no! the croc hunter couldn't be gone! but it was true :( news channel after news channel, including cnn, were reporting his devastating death. i couldn't believe it! he was killed on monday while filming an underwater documentary at the great barrier reef by a stingray.
i can no longer look forward to sunday afternoons tuning into animal planet's men on the edge series, "croc diaries" as steve takes us on a tour of australia zoo, their conservation efforts and amazing animal rescues. there's no one in the world who can replace steve's character - no one else can say "crikey!" quite like him. his accent, his excitement, his love of animals, there's no other steve irwin. he will be missed.

i actually wish i were at work
in less than 48 hours (hopefully) the secret will be out. i look forward to this new challenge and opportunity in my career! i could possibly be building this up to be bigger than it actually is, but hey, it's new and different for me, and i'm honoured to be chosen for this. argh, if only it were tuesday afternoon already!
nobody talks anymore
i was at a work baby shower, catching up w/the mom-to-be, dianne, and she was bugging me because i've been having a dry-spell and haven't updated my blog in over a week. that's when my mate, sue, said that she doesn't blog as often, because she loses that personal touch of a phone call (blimey!). but sue and i blog for different reasons......hers - she and her boyfriend moved to canada from the uk, and blogs help her keep in touch w/family & friends; mine - i guess this could be called a hobby :-) in that same week, i saw my friend angela and she also commented on my lack of blogging. she had a quiet day at work and was hoping i would post during the day. ironically, i had started my pne post that very day, but wasn't inspired enough to actually finish it.
i was looking at my cell phone call history yesterday and i realized i really don't talk to anyone on the phone anymore. "chris cell" is the most frequently shown number - either dialed or received. then my "mom & dad home" shows up next. then i had a few numbers i didn't recognize.....one of the calls was from PADS, my optometrist, and some others i don't remember. my last "friend" phone call was about 2 weeks ago.....i don't know if the text message last weekend to geoff in toronto counts.....
in this electronic age we've all gotten so used to e-mailing and text messaging. all my plans are made via evite or e-mail. mind you, i do talk to ppl via phone when i'm at work.....most often it's vanessa, in between changing natasha's diapers and playtime. once in a while i'll ring up sunny, usually that's when we have so much to catch up on, that it could literally take me an hour to type an e-mail. even at work i don't talk to a lot of ppl.....we use sametime, our internal chatting room. it's ridiculous because sometimes i'm ST-ing someone across the cubicle wall from me :P
when was the last time i had an honest-to-goodness chat via phone w/my friends? i think that would be 2 weeks ago w/sunny when she returned to toronto from turkey. before that? i have almost no idea. i mean, i see my friends regularly after we've conferred via e-mail about what to do, when to do it, and where to go, etc. of course, we chat lots when we get together, but that's because we're face-to-face, and there's always stuff to talk about.
when i want to catch up w/my friends' lives, then i automatically check out their blogs and see what they've been up to. then i can link onto their friends' blogs and see what they blog about. it's a vicious cycle that keeps going and going.

sushi garden
mmm, mmm, mmm! after many, many weeks of renovations, sushi garden has finally re-opened! they actually re-opened about a week-and-a-half ago, but coordinating schedules posed a bit of a delay :-)
we got there at 7:45 for dinner, and were immediately awed to see so many ppl waiting in line for a table and/or take-out orders. even now that they've doubled their seating capacity, there are just as many ppl waiting to get seated. it's absolutely ridiculous! a true testimony to how popular (and yummy) they are. the 9 sushi chefs lined up are pretty impressive, but the 3 servers were seriously shorthanded. they had 3 before the expansion, so you think they'd find 3 more to hire. oh well.
we were seated after a 1/2 hour wait, which wasn't too bad. we tried staring at some diners in the hopes it would scare them into eating faster, but to no avail. while waiting, we contemplated what we wanted to eat, and by the time we sat down, we had our orders taken right away. we were starving! chris and i shared the following: spicy tuna roll, alaska roll, gyoza, prawn tempura, dynamite roll and green salad. chris' salad was to help counterbalance all the bad stuff he ate yesterday at the pne :-)
all in all, a very yummy meal! unfortunately not all the diners were happy diners. the table next to us stormed out of the restaurant after the server forgot to place their order. it was a bit dramatic and somewhat unnecessary in my opinion, but whatever, i actually got to eat my food :-)
we got there at 7:45 for dinner, and were immediately awed to see so many ppl waiting in line for a table and/or take-out orders. even now that they've doubled their seating capacity, there are just as many ppl waiting to get seated. it's absolutely ridiculous! a true testimony to how popular (and yummy) they are. the 9 sushi chefs lined up are pretty impressive, but the 3 servers were seriously shorthanded. they had 3 before the expansion, so you think they'd find 3 more to hire. oh well.
